Paint it Black

In New York-based Oliver Lutz's first solo museum show, Paint it Black, Artpace presents an exhibition experience exploring dimensions of contemporary mass spectacle. Austere paintings, cloaking pigments, sound, and surveillance technology implicate the viewer in an installation that deconstructs modes of viewing, cognition and participation in spectacles, be they art exhibitions or sporting events.

+/- 200

Bihl Haus Arts is pleased to present the exhibition +/- 200, an installation of 200 (more or less) small collages by Marcy McChesney. McChesney’s postcard-sized collages, produced on a near-daily basis for over a year from found and recycled materials, exhibit an elegant economy of decision-making about color, form and texture. Through this process, the artist has become fascinated by the organic, instinctual spontaneity and immediacy of creating small-format collages. The works, viewed both individually and en mass in the installation are hung end-to-end in a continuous line. They form a belt-like separation of the gallery walls and convey the sense that beauty can be found in the most common ephemera. "Small Collages" workshop on Sat, July 12, 2-4pm. ($20.00 per person. For reservations, call 383-9723)

Blue Star 23: Playing with Time

Blue Star 23: Playing with Time
Blue Star 23: Playing with Time

Blue Star Contemporary Art Center celebrates twenty-three years with the Blue Star 23: Playing with Time exhibit curated by David S. Rubin opening June 26 through August 17, 2008. The exhibition includes recent works by both established and emerging area artists who use time or space as major themes in their work.

Many of the artists combine references to the past and the present, and at times the future. This can be seen in the photographs of Kathy Vargas, who uses a process of double exposure, or in those by Rolando Briseño and Trish Simonite, who achieve a similar effect through digital technology. John William Keedy also uses digital processes as he creates double self-portraits that show the artist in passive and active moments within a single photograph.

David Anthony Garcia gives abstract form to the idea of connectivity within the space/time continuum, while other artists, such as Ansen Seale and Aaron Forland, use pictorial language to represent movements of dance or music. Conceptual artists Stuart Allen, Suzanne Paquette, and Nate Cassie translate their ideas about time using abstract vocabularies. Allen employs a sailcloth filter to photograph light at different times of day, while Paquette makes drawings to study the shifts in light during the cycle of a variable star. Cassie visually quantifies two different events that took place at two different points in time, but at the same location. Chris Sauter's installation, a work that took several years to complete, is a record of its own making. It includes all the documentation from original concept and drawings to completed installation.

The exhibition includes an example from the late Linda Pace's Time Lines series, where objects gathered cumulatively over time are joined together and bonded by their uniform color. Justin Parr's installation relives a road trip to Marfa through photo-documentation of a sculptural object, while Justin Boyd's video and sound installation records the artist's attempt to match sound to landscape while on a long drive. Other time-based works include an interactive installation by George and Catherine Cisneros and videos or animations by Joey Fauerso, Karen Mahaffy, Potter-Belmar Labs, Juan Miguel Ramos and Luis Valderas.

Exodus

Exodus
Exodus

The pre-apocalyptic images in the Exodus exhibition are an attempt to compare images of past religious, historical doctrines and superstitions with our contemporary fears of the end of days.

My focus has always been on community awareness through images of my Westside San Antonio barrio, my family, and my neighbors. This exhibit also focuses on community but a more universal community. During the past few years many people from around the world have been experiencing fears of the end of days, because of the current events both natural and political. What is interesting is that these fears have not changed from those fears of the past, however the imagery has. Contemporary man has combined the past with the present by modifying these images to better represent our own times. My hope is, through these pre-apocalyptic images in the Exodus exhibition, to make a comparison of historical religious philosophies and doctrines, superstitions and folklores of many cultures to our ever-changing contemporary age. --Alex Rubio

Atmospheres

Atmospheres
Atmospheres

Artist's statement: With this body of work I am incorporating painting and drawing. Creating atmospheres and layered pictorial rhythms that are composed through the dialogue between spontaneous mark making and dynamic forms and lines. These techniques are used to convey ideas of balancing intuition and knowledge, the playful approach of pushing paint into sensual textures and leaving traces of motion made by my body.

The development of ideas has been from observing and working with Pre-Columbian imagery and being interested in indigenous ways of expression. Childhood exposure to nature, fabric patterns, popular imagery, various musical styles especially the musical styles from Warner Brothers cartoons have also been paticipants in the concepts that motivate me to paint and draw.

Women’s Insights: The Dual Nature of the Female Soul

"Women's Insights: The Dual Nature of the Female Soul" is an art project by Raquel Beechner dealing with the four seasons of a woman's life focusing on the way women feel, and the way women instinctually live their life cycles in their own unique and creative way. The live performance piece that accompanies this exhibition will consist of writings and drawings that bring out the story of the tamed and unbridled woman archetype behind the visual images she creates. The writings were based on many interviews of women of all ages throughout the nation. Their collective voice is narrated as the artist dances on sand while drawing the symbols present within her art.

The exhibition and live performance will take place on Thursday, July 3, 2008 from 6-8pm in the Jump Start Theatre located at 108 Blue Star in the Blue Star Arts Complex, at the corner of Probandt and S. Alamo.

"Entre la Carpa (Inside the Tent)"

Adriana Garcia explores self-identity through a new series of brilliant large-scale paintings and drawings inspired by her family history. "La Carpa Garcia", a very popular traveling circus tent show begun by Adriana's great-grandfather in 1914, performed throughout the U.S Southwest until 1947. La Carpa Garcia was most famous for a comedic routine by a character called Don Fito, and a tightrope performance by Pilar Garcia. Esperanza Garcia, one of the members of the family troupe, died at an early age from a fall from a tightrope. Through these family personalities and their circus occupations and acts, Adriana delves into universal themes of life and death, joy and loss. But at whatever the cost, the show must go on.

Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art from Mexico City

Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art from Mexico City
Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art from Mexico City

Escultura Social focuses on art that combines popular culture with a conceptual style that can be humorous, macabre and imaginative in pushing the boundaries of art. This exhibition is not defining a "movement" or looking at a panorama of artists working in Mexico, instead, it includes innovative work made primarily in the last three years that has had a significant impact outside of Mexico by artists who formed a community in Mexico City and have often collaborated on projects together.

Influenced by twentieth-century art historical movements such as conceptualism, "actions" and "happenings", the work also refers to aspects of popular culture -- television, music, advertising or flea markets -- and its history, urban life and current political issues. Escultura Social includes site-specific, performative and ephemeral projects in addition to videos, photographs and installations.
