Ongoing: Janaki Lennie

New work by Houston-based artist Janaki Lennie

Ongoing: Juxtapositions

Juxtapositions brings together an impressive roster of San Antonio-based artists whose work is informed by the processes of gathering and collecting. Whether working in the two-dimensional language of collage or the three-dimensions of sculpture, these artists parlay their interest in real objects and visual history into unique artworks, which represent familiar things arrangements that prompt new consideration. The process of accumulation draws out themes of similarity and difference—public and private—evoked through the familiarity of the objects, which are often everyday items made unique only by the hands that touch them. The Alameda Theater's unique historic structure lends itself to a show like "Juxtapositions" because, much like found objects, the space weaves together a wide range of architectural motifs drawn from San Antonio's ethnically diverse immigrant cultures.

Ongoing: Hall of Thirty-Three Bays: Photographs by Hiroshi Sugi

The compassionate visage of more than a thousand Buddhas displayed in a Twelfth Century temple in the ancient Japanese capital of Kyoto have been filtered through the lens of photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948) in his series Hall of Thirty-Three Bays (1995). On loan from the private collection of Linda Pace, nine photographs from this series will be on display in the Asian Special Exhibitions Gallery. This exhibition will travel to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth this fall.

Ongoing: ARTMATTERS 10: Ernesto Pujol:Walk#1

ARTMATTERS 10
Ernesto Pujol:Walk#1

New York-based artist Ernesto Pujol is known for incorporating references to the body in various mediums, ranging from installations to digital photographs. Often focusing on the loss of individuality and gender due to imposing group ideology, Pujol's innovative multi-media works also explore the artist's reflections on illness, politics and religion.

This summer the McNay is pleased to premier Walk#1 marking a return in Pujol's work to the language of the body by way of the landscape.

The 10th exhibition in the ARTMATTERS series, this unique installation includes a series of twenty-two black and white digital images depicting the artist's walk through a historical landscape. The tradition of meditative and prayerful walks is common to many ancient faiths such as Western and Orthodox Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism, particularly as it relates to monks and pilgrims who meditate and pray as they walk through cloisters and on routes to holy places. Walk #1 is the first in a new series that Pujol plans to perform in various military cemeteries and other sites relevant to American history. This solitary performance is the result of the artist's own meditation on conflict in the Middle East and his interpretation of American historical metaphors where the nation has been divided by violence and mourned for peace.

To complement his gallery presentation, Pujol will premiere a new performance created especially for the McNay entitled MourningCircle#2 on June 29 at 6:15pm—a silent thirty minute site-specific performance work viewed from a distance, in which Pujol will repeatedly pace the small, circular area before the museum's Koehler Fountain—the embodiment of a quiet but profound private mourning in keeping with the manner of traditional monastic cloister walks.

Sacred Art of Altars

Jimmy in Binary

Jimmy Kuehnle presents large "binary drawings," video, his "Everything Machine" and a special surprise at an opening of such epic proportions that the gods themselves might take a peek. Kuehnle, known for his eccentric bicycle performances, keeps the energy of absurdity alive. His drawings and video exaggerate the distance between man and machine and representation and translation. While the "Everything Machine" might do just that, it allows the viewer to take an interactive stab at understanding their own insignificance and import at the same time.

Window on the World

A collection of brightly colored, fanciful and exotic paintings express each artist's vision of the world around them.

Theoria, Ephemerali & Hot Room

"Yokai zyukkei: Landscape with Monsters"
Mimi Kato, referencing the prints of Japanese masters, such as Hokusai and Toba Sojo, recreates landscapes inhabited with forgotten monsters now living in contemporary society. Her exhibition consists of several large, scroll-like prints.

In his new small sculpture series entitled Ephemerali, Brian Jobe casts plastic bags in green tinted plaster and attaches a host of mixed media materials to them, ranging from clear thread to craft berries and zip ties. These casts are, in effect, paused in time and assemblage creates a conversation about lightness, airflow and time.

Jay Monday will be showing new paintings entitled "Hot Room."

New Spain, New Spin, New Works, Old Tin: The Art of Jeri Moe

New Mexico artist Jeri Moe cuts, hammers and welds intricate sculptures from recycled, painted tin as well as raw tin and copper. Many works are inspired by designs found on the tin. Moe combines images and words in a humorous and profound way; she is a masterful hammer- and wordsmith in the tradition of Jenny Holzer. Her works are small in scale but epic in substance, questioning the effects of industrialization on the agrarian life, religion, gender, sexism and even nostalgia. Moe's nichos, retablos, "paintings" and standing sculptures are colorful, humorous and wry.

The New Hotness

"Painting is changing. The idea of a particular "ism" or school is reminiscent of a flat soft drink. I take several of these historical ideologies and put them in a blender. I serve up an explosive, visual 190 proof margarita—everclear not tequila—that is excessive and ambitious. It is a hedonistic long pour that might splash everywhere. (You're in trouble if you have a papercut.) The goal is a reaction from the fishbowl sized glass."

-Howard Sherman

Barrio Dog & The Cholo Landscape

The "Barrio Dog" and "The Cholo Landscape" are series of work spanning the last two years. The "Barrio Dog" series explores the ability of the image of the dog to serve as a metaphor for the Cholo while the "Cholo Landscape" series explores the landscape and its ability to provide an icon that provokes mystery and contemplation. "Cholo Landscape" began during the summer of 2005 while "Barrio Dog" is a series revisited in 2005 from a series of prints created in 1975.

Automatic Intuition: Mi Congal

"Automatic Intuition: Mi Congal" deals with the freeform way the art comes together and how the artist relies on intuition to create parameters of intent. Reyes' works relies on the interplay of performance and the behavior of the media to create a dialogue between these two domains.

Passages Through Memory: Plaza Portals

"When I came across the demolition of the interior space of a historical building in Montrose, the Plaza Hotel, I was inspired to inquire how to acquire the doors I saw leaning against the interior walls of the space.
